New Year New You
(alongside older wiser bits)

In a year where tears have fallen like rain, there is a way that we can be with it all, and let this rain water the plants of our deepest yearning - personally, culturally, collectively, and as a planet.. So that it can land on the soils of our darkest hour.. So that all can be held, suspended, in wet discomfort, and so that it can innovate new life and sprouted growth of untapped and even unfathomed possibility.

It is a curious thing- the invisible demarcation of time through endings and beginnings.. but certainly the containers that time allow us can be so generative and downright helpful. The year that we all underwent was profound- whichever way you slice it. While there is a part of me that is looking forward and toward things I’d like to see, there is an equally loud voice that wants to really hold what has been. This is a year that has given voice to a lot of things that have gone unnoticed and unheard. The quieter voices of our psyches and of our culture. The places under-served and under-resourced. A year of extreme loss and pain, if not for you personally, then for your neighbor and therefore, on some level, to you. It is not a time to simply say goodbye to these things but rather to really hold, hear, and acknowledge all of the pain, transition, and fear, of everyone. We are inextricably a part of the whole- of this pulsating organism called life. It has also been a year of deeper listening, kindnesses, slowing down, showing up for each other, and of wild creativity to meet and dance with the changes of reality.

Our culture teaches us to run from discomfort, to eagerly turn the page, but too much has been reveled - things that we can not forget, not to mention that our greatest efforts to outrun our pain are futile- she is a speedy, clever animal- and one to make friends with- like besties to the ends of time. Engaging ceremony is a beautiful way to really integrate- to move into and through things that are difficult so that they can churn and burn.. So that they will work for us rather than against, and do all the rearranging of our inner world that is necessary to live in the world we envision.. But most importantly so that we become wise.

And yes on the one hand everything is already here. But also, the evolution of a species is real; neuropathways are formed; a seed germinates, sprouts, grows, bears fruit, and goes to seed again. There is nothing to find or fix and we can conceive of a world kinder and more beautiful than we can imagine. Both are true. We can love this moment and this body exactly as it is, AND we can innovate and compose the symphony of a lifetime- that is your creative birthright. I invite you to join me in ceremony next weekend. Over the course of the 3 days, we will hold and be held, envision and pitch forward, create and compose, let our yoga and meditation take us to the places we can not rightly see. ..Yet.. And then allow the breath to be the quiet messenger of metamorphosis. I would love to see you there in the rites and rituals of a new year and a new you:

“Give me everything mangled and bruised,
And I will make a light of it to make you weep,
And we will have rain,
And begin again.”

“a beauty remote yet present; jungle ruins, bearing traces of things unvoiced and unseen that lurk in the substrata of dreams; mysteries of origins- and glimpses… of paradise.”
